Economist, engineer, strategist, consultant. I am fascinated by the frontiers of human progress: innovation vs ignorance; wealth vs poverty.
I am currently Head of Services at the Open Knowledge Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the creation, sharing and application of Open Knowledge in the Digital Age.
I am also a data engineer and development economist at Whythawk, which I founded in 1998. Whythawk focuses on decision support, economic modelling, market insight and data analysis.
I write a weekly column on economics, business and risk for the Cape Argus, owned by Independent Newspapers, and have lectured, written and harangued people about the nature of economics, development and risk for over a decade.
