Donald Sterling’s appalling racist rant: the NBA must force him out of the game NOW

Clippers owner tells girlfriend not to bring black people to his games, officially replaces Cliven Bundy as America’s racist icon of the moment.

Holy fuck. Are you kidding me?

Donald Sterling, the owner of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, told his girlfriend not to post pictures on Instagram of herself with black people and not to bring black people to his basketball games, according to an audio recording posted by TMZ.

Ummm. Excuse me?

In the recording, Sterling and his girlfriend are fighting over a picture she posted to Instagram of herself with NBA legend Magic Johnson, and Sterling demands that she stop “broadcasting” that she associates with black people. Sterling tells his girlfriend: “You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that … and not to bring them to my games.”

Later, he makes the point specifically about Magic Johnson, telling her that “it’s too bad you can’t admire (Johnson) privately…bring him here, feed him, f*** him, I don’t care. You can do anything. But don’t put him on an Instagram for the world to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games. OK?”

You really have to hear the audio. It’s hard to fathom the level of racism and incoherence on display. This isn’t a Klan meeting in Lower Mississippi in 1964. This is a wealthy, educated, successful businessman in one of America’s elite urban media centers in 2014. Hell, just listen.

One of my two favorite players in basketball, Chris Paul, is a member of the Clippers, and he’s contractually obligated to come to Sterling’s games. Like most blacks in America, he’s probably been on the wrong end of racism. This probably isn’t the first time he’s been made to feel like there’s something wrong with him because of the color of his skin. Imagine – it’s okay to be black, but do you have to flaunt it. It’s okay to associate with The Negro, even to fuck him, just keep it on the down low because it’s embarrassing. As in, keep it out in the slave quarters and don’t bring it up to the big house, I guess.

Next time you hear someone talking about American sports being like a plantation and you think it’s a bunch of hyperbole, remember this moment.

How does Chris Paul suit up for Game 4 vs. the Warriors? How does Blake Griffin ever pull on a Clippers uniform again? Matt Barnes, Jamaal Crawford, DeAndre Jordan, Glen Davis – how do any of these players show up for work tomorrow?

75% of the players in the NBA are black – even if they don’t play for Sterling, how do they not feel tainted by this?

I’m not sure what the NBA’s rules really allow here. I’m sure they can fine and suspend Sterling, but at this stage nothing short of forcing him to sell the team and running him out of basketball forever is going to be acceptable, and if they don’t do that I’m all in favor of the union staging a general strike – starting tomorrow in Oakland.

Sterling has been a PoS for a very long time. This must be the end.
