Or, as it has been known for 600 years, “Greensleeves.” This is a lovely version by Liz Story, pianist extraordinaire, from her Christmas album, The Gift. The lyrics to “What Child is This?” were written in the 19th century, but “Greensleeves” itself has been associated with Christmas since the 1660s. Many of our more familiar carols started life 600 years ago, or even more, often as secular songs. Over the years “Greensleeves” has lent itself to various improvisations, especially for the lute and guitar–Story adds some sparkling piano moves.
