The the final round matchup between #10 seed Meat Loaf and unseeded upstart Duran Duran saw more than 12,500 votes cast, a new Tournament of Rock record. Thanks to everyone who showed up to voice their support.
Along the way we’ve had some laughs, traded some barbs, shaken our heads in disbelief at some of the results, watched some videos, and a few of us have reveled in the irony and spectacle of it all. It has indeed been fun.
The final was a see-saw affair. It started slow, then DD surged to what looked like an insurmountable lead. But the Meat Loaf fan club struck back, pulling even and nudging ahead for a few minutes. But the Duranies rallied and pulled away, in the end tallying 58.15% of the vote.
Ladies and gentlemen, please congratulate your choice for the greatest corporate band in the world, DURAN DURAN! Let’s celebrate with Simon doing is David Bowie impression.

I am stunned. I expected Journey or KISS or Aerosmith or Bon Jovi to take it, and they all pretty much went out early.
The tribe has spoken.
The title of the contest was “Monsters of the Mainstream”. And since the top 16 were all generally from the 1980’s, it’s hard to argue with the eventual winner. There were few bands as big as Duran Duran was in the 80’s. And this just goes to show that their broad appeal has hung on over the years.
Or, us DD fans are more rabid and more pervasive on the internet than the other acts. One of the two. 😉
Maybe it’s a bit of both. 🙂 😉
I kind of knew that Duran Duran would win. And how could they not win? Their fans are ravenous.
If Duran Duran loses at something the fans gather together and get the public to vote for them. I’m a Duranie from way back. I’m happy about these results because they’re pretty good.
People think that because a band hasn’t been around for very long it means that their fans aren’t there. But as you can see from these results the Duranies have spoken for them.
i know it, DURAN DURAN the best band♥
Ahhhhh, the victory of being proclaimed CORPORATE ROCK KINGS…… their loyal subjects bow in unison. Oh wait…. they are not bowing…. they are looking for all their money already spent on the boys….. yessss! Victory indeed!
~I do love me some DD~ DuDuDu Du DuDu Du DuDu Du Du DuDuDu DuDuuuuuuuuuu….
