Ah. That is clearly a phenomenon known as The Nexus of Ubertramp.
Close. But this can’t be real. It has to be an artists rendering because if it’s what I think it is, it is impossible to take a picture of it. No camera or probe would survive the gravitational forces involved. This looks like what happens when two unstable worm holes collide. Or, even worse, a cross current between two intersecting gravity waves…which could theoretically happen if two ships came out of hyperspace into the same point in n-space. Not a pretty picture.
