Tournament of Rock: Adele vs. Paul Steel

UPDATE: As of Tuesday morning, Paul Steel holds a 60%-40% lead over Adele in Match #3. Voting on this round closes Thursday night, so click those links, give them a listen, then use the poll below to tell us who you like best.

First, the results. In Match #2, S&R readers preferred IAMX over Animal Collective by a tally of 74% to 26%. We expected it to be closer, honestly, but the people have spoken and IAMX moves on to the second round to meet The Well Wishers.

Now, Match #3. This week’s throwdown pits a couple of young Brits getting major critical acclaim against each other.

Our first competitor is 20 year-old Adele, the two-time Grammy winner (including Best New Artist).

Her opponent, also just 20 years old, is Brighton-based guitar pop prodigy Paul Steel.

  1. Man this was tough, Amy Winehouse not on drugs, or the dude who uses cheesy programming effects that were “futuristic” in the 60’s, yet ironically chooses to use them on a “space” themed songs in 2009 just like every college alt band in America. I voted for the chick who copied the sound of the other chick who copied the sound of jazz singers in the 30’s.

  2. I hope some of the bands in upcoming weeks will do a better job of tickling your fancy, although you’re notoriously hard to impress.

Pretty funny, Darrell. Never knew the name of that “other chick, though.

My evaluation. . . Adele: Significant talent, but slight affectation annoys. Paul Steel: Super-catchy, but lightweight. I would listen to neither, but don’t wish to discourage young musicians. Went with Adele for her soulfulness.

  4. Russ: Amy Winehouse

Sam: I’ve already admittedly stated that I pretty much hate everything, so I’ll probably be the only Debbie Downer on these threads anyways.

  5. Hmmmm. I’m glad I’m not the only one to hear Queen and the Beach Boys in Paul Steel. I wasn’t thrilled with Ray Gun and The Way You Are, but the other two were nice. Adele just seems to be trying too hard.

  6. There’s no question that Adele is talented. I think this bout for me came down to the songs. If Adele were singing Duffy’s or Lucky Soul’s songs she’d have gotten my vote. I just like Steel’s tunes better, in the end.

But they’re both so young. It will be interesting to see where their careers go as they mature.
