Sand dune? Sand hill? Sand something?
Definitely a mound of windblown sand.
Ubertramp’s split personality?
No outlandish explanations this time. I have to admit, though, you had me stumped there for a while. I was sure it was a sand dune as well. But then I figured it out.
It’s a kite.
As most you know, the Ishigakijima Kite Festival was held a couple of weeks ago in Okinawa. There is a segment of the festival dedicated to kite fighting and this image is of the kite that took third. As you can tell, the spine of kite is all bent out of shape and the surface fabric is bunched up at the top. This is a result of it crash-landing when the flyer tried to dive at a competitor in a last ditch attempt to cut its strings.
Ann is right, but off by a few orders of magnitude. The shot was taken on top of a the second highest point on The Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. Here is another shot at that same point: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/dml9nKvuLedxyXEbOpO0zD477v2vu4q-Htrn1yM62XQ?feat=directlink
And here are a few others of the area: http://picasaweb.google.com/robintutt/20100706?authkey=Gv1sRgCJaFv9v3_NrVMA&feat=directlink
